Accounting occupations may be moved from SOL to COSL

Changes to SOL

There is a move by the government to remove accountants from the SOL. This will have a significant effect on many applicants for skilled independent (SC 189) and graduate temporary subclass SC 485 visas. Many of these prospective applicants are international students.

The decision has not yet been finalised, but discussions are underway with the accounting professional bodies and other interest groups to justify accountants continuing to be included on the Skilled Occupations List. However students applying for the SC 485 Post Study Work Stream would not be affected.

Submission have been made by professional bodies against this move stating that the job market for accountants remains strong. Instead they have suggest that a higher points score be made as the requirement for accountants.

A firm decision has not been made as yet in this regard. The new Skilled Occupations List for 2014-15 effective from 1 July 2014 is likely to be announced in April or May 2014 when we will know for sure.
